A RARE CIZHOU PAINTED FIGURE OF A BODHISATTVA
YUAN- EARLY MING DYNASTY, 14TH-15TH CENTURY
Avalokitesvara is modelled seated in rajalilasana on a waisted rectangular plinth decorated with moulded ruyi heads. The figure wears a jeweled necklace, a long scarf over the shoulders and a dhoti tied at the waist. The face is delicately detailed below a crown centred by a figure of Amitabha Buddha. It is painted in brown and russet tones on a cream slip under a clear glaze.
