Lot Essay

The composition is based on Giulio Romano's painting in the Sala di Troia in the Palazzo Ducale, Mantua, which in turn was inspired by an antique bas-relief. There is also an engraving of the same subject by Diana Scultori. The impression in the British Museum bears the same watermark, but appears to be slightly earlier, before the crack at the lower edge of the plate.
