The first map to be devoted specifically to the Arctic, first issued in 1595, but here updated to include the findings of Barent's Novaya Zembla voyage. The North Pole was believed to be open sea until the middle of the 19th century. Burden 88.

Engraved handcolored map, plate 374 x 388mm, sheet 394 x 418mm. Decorative border, roundels at each corner with title and maps of islands. Latin text on verso. (Light reinforcement at centerfold, margins trimmed to square shape with some loss of text on verso.) Provenance: Barry Ruderman, Inc.
