PELHAM, Edward (fl. 1630). Gods Power and Providence: Shewed, in the Miraculous Preservation and Deliverance of eight Englishmen, left by mischance in Green-land Anno 1630, nine moneths and twelve days. London: John Partridge, 1631.
Marooned in the ice over winter: a rare first edition survival narrative with an important map. Pelham, a cast-away gunner's mate, describes survival in the far North, hunting, the whaling industry and the Muscovy Company's activity in Spitsbergen, which for a long time was thought of as part of Greenland. He and his mates were marooned there after a hunting expedition when their ship was prevented by drift ice from collecting them. The map is surrounded by vignettes showing how to harpoon a breaching whale, how to kill polar bears and walruses, how blubber is boiled, etc. Two states of the dedication leaf are known, this is the one with mention of Sir J. Merick. Chavanne 5226; Sabin 59586; STC 19566.
Small quarto (175 x 120mm). Folding engraved map with 11 surrounding vignettes (few neat repaired tears to map; narrow reinforcement to bottom edge of title, last 2 text leaves with lower corners renewed, affecting corner of tailpiece on last leaf). Modern red morocco gilt, edges gilt. Provenance: William Reese Co.
