VEER, Gerrit de (c.1573-after 1598). Tre navigationi fatte dagli olandesi, e zelandesi. Venice: Girolamo Porro, 1599.
The first edition in Italian, published the year after the Dutch and Latin editions. Two issues of Giunio Parisio’s translation were printed the same year, the present one by Girolamo Porro and the other by Ciotti. The fine engravings are reduced versions of the illustrations in the first edition, depicting scenes from Barentsz’s three expeditions of 1594-1597. See preceding lot for a description of the importance of these voyages. Adams V-317 (Ciotti issue); Brunet V, 1127 (Porro issue); Mortimer Italian 521.
Quarto (197 x 142mm). Engraved vignette of ships at Novaya Zemlya incorporating Ciotti's device on title, 31 engraved plates. This copy without the engraving of the compass rose on a4v (like the LOC copy and 2 Porro issue BM copies). Contemporary vellum, spine lettered in manuscript (soiling, remnants only of ties, some wear to endpapers), custom chemise and slipcase. Provenance: Harrison D. Horblit, 1912-1988 (bookplate) – Antiquariaat Junk.
