The first edition in English of Golovnin’s account of being taken prisoner by the Japanese in 1811. A Russian naval officer, Golovnin was commissioned to survey the coasts of Kamchatka, the Russian-American colonies, and the Kuril Islands. While surveying the Hokkaido Straits, he was fired upon, restrained, and imprisoned for two years. Lada-Mocarski 82 and 153; Wickersham 6166.

Two volumes, octavo (210 x 128mm). 3 ad pp. (some foxing). 19th-century half calf over marbled boards (rebacked with original spine laid down, light rubbing to extremities). Provenance: Earl of Eglinton (bookplates) – Rulon-Miller Books.
