First Alsop edition of this harrowing captivity from the Northwest coast, with the rare portrait of Chief Maquina. This is the second edition overall, with substantial contributions by Richard Alsop who interviewed John Jewitt in Middletown for further details. Jewitt was one of two survivors after the attack on his ship in Nootka Sound. He was enslaved by the chief Maquina and spent three years in captivity until finally rescued. 12mo (172 x 105mm). Engraved frontispiece with partial handcoloring (frontispiece bound tightly affecting caption; scattered small tears from margins, some soiling to prelims, pale browning). Woodcut portrait of Maquina above a whaling scene pasted to inside front cover ("where it belongs" according to Lathrop Harper, 1942 cat). Contemporary sheep (rebacked); custom box.
