KRUZENSHTERN, Ivan Fedorovich (1770-1846). Reise um die Welt in den Jahren 1803, 1804, 1805 und 1806 auf Befehl Seiner Kaiserl Majestät Alexanders des Ersten. Berlin: Haude und Spener, 1811-1812.
A fine copy of the first edition published in Germany, rare with the full complement of plates and two Langsdorff items not present in all copies. Grigory Langsdorff was a naturalist and physician on Kruzenshtern's voyage. Arctic Bib. 9378A (without mention of the map); Howes K-272; cf. Lada-Mocarski 61 and 62; Forbes 421.
Two volumes bound in three, 12mo (120 x 97mm). 3 frontispieces of these 2 handcolored; 11 double-page engraved plates; large folding engraved map handcolored in outline; vol. 3 with an 8-page treatise by Langsdorff of the practice of tattooing with illustration of tools and an 8-page prospectus for Langsdorff's travels at end. As described in detail by Forbes, copies vary as to the number of plates. In this copy the maximum number is present though many of the plates and the chart which belong in volume one are here bound at the ends of the other two volumes. Forbes also describes the prospectus on Langsdorff's work as present in only two of the copies he examined and he makes no mention of the eight-page Langsdorff illustrated treatise on tattooing which is in this copy. Contemporary boards (light wear); custom clamshell box. Provenance: P. Mascher (early ownership inscriptions in each volume) – Hordern House.
