PATTERSON, Samuel (b.1875). Narrative of the Adventures and Sufferings of Samuel Patterson, Experienced in the Pacific Ocean, and Many Other Parts of the World, with an Account of the Feegee, and Sandwich Islands. [Massachusetts:] From the Press in Palmer, 1817.

The rare first edition of Patterson’s observations of the Pacific coasts. An American sailor, Patterson made three voyages between 1802-1808, including visits to Hawaii, Guinea, California, the northwest coast of America including Alaska, and Australia. Most important, however, are his descriptions of Fiji, where he was shipwrecked in 1808 and remained for six months. This work was compiled by Ezekiel Terry, who writes in the preface that Patterson's “...nerves are so affected by his sufferings, as that he is incapable of writing himself, and the deficiency of his papers has been filled up by the compiler, under his inspection. Much pains has been taken in preparing this work for public view, to render it truly useful and beneficial to the world." Howes refers to this as the second issue, noting a Rhode Island issue published the same year as the first; the Rhode Island issue, however, is unrecorded in the other references consulted. Ferguson 692; Forbes 470; Hill 1315; Howes P-122; Lada-Mocarski 74; Sabin 59145.
