A presentation copy of the first edition, inscribed by the author on the eve of his departure for Canada, on the front free endpaper: "Presented to Col. Sir Augustus D'Este by his faithful & obliged Svt. / the Author." Below this d'Este has signed and dated the receipt; he has also inscribed on the first page, "Given to me by my dear, esteemed, and highly valued friend, Sir George Simpson, April 17, 1847. The day before he left London for the Canadas." Simpson was Governor General of the Hudson's Bay Company. Forbes 1670; Hill 1572; Howes S-495; Lada-Mocarski 129; Sabin 81343; Wickersham 4126.

Two volumes, octavo (233 x 135mm). Frontispiece author portrait; folding lithographed route map (some foxing to plates, ads, and to text at ends). Publisher's original cloth (worn, rebacked with faded spines laid down, hinges cracked, a little wear to fore-edge of vol. 1, bookplates removed). Provenance: Augustus d'Este (1794-1848; presentation inscription, ownership inscriptions) – a lending library (faint ink inscriptions) – Ximenes Rare Books.
