A fine association copy of the first edition with the author's signature and sentiment tipped-in to volume two and dated 1872. A pencil note records that these books were obtained from the family of Arctic explorer and naturalist, Sir John Richardson (1787-1865). Two volumes, tall octavo (250 x 158mm). Half-titles. 4 maps, 3 of which are folding and 2 of those loose in rear pocket; 36 lithographed plates, 15 of which are colored (some occasional spotting). Publishers’ blue cloth gilt (vol. 1 recased, some repair to heads of spines, hinges strengthened, endpapers with some glue-staining). Provenance: John Booth Richardson (eldest son of John Richardson, bookplates) – Chet Ross Rare Books.
