The first edition of Sen. Sumner’s speech supporting the acquisition of the Alaska territory, with the second edition of the map, often lacking. Sumner delivered this speech to the Senate to urge the ratification of the Treaty of Cession of Russian America to the United States. The map was the first to show the name “Alaska” across the mainland of the territory. Howes S-1134; Lada-Mocarski 159; Tourville 4391; Wickersham 4128.
