Lot Essay

Kusama in Flower Garden (Lot 205) is different from Kusama's usual subject matter of abstract dots or still life. It is rare to see her depict a landscape with the horizon in the middle of the piece. The upper half of the work is filled with polka dots in the classic style of Kusama - its effect is akin to the dizzying view of a starry sky. True to her concept of infinity, the garden in the lower half is richly composed of a collage of photographs. Kusama also introduced the image of her soft sculpture - they have become exotic plants in this fairytale. She positioned her tiny silhouette in the centre of the work - dressed entirely in yellow, the artist perfectly obliterates herself into the background.
