Lot Essay

This present hu tablet is an extremely rare cloisonne enamel exemple bearing this type of decoration. The association of flying cranes and trigrams is typical of the Jiajing period and is usually found on porcelains under Emperor Jiajing's reign. The motif of flying cranes (yipin niao) implies wishes for rising high in rank. The trigrams are ancient symbols associated with Daoist divination. It reflects Emperor Jiajing's keen interest in Daoism and the pursuit of immortality.
