THE DUEL
The label is a three color linoleum cut diptych cut into equal halves, one for each wine. The motif is of a vintage moto race. One rider enters view, while the other exits. The number 62 depicted is Manfred’s very own “lucky” race number. 1962 also happens to be Elaine’s birth year.
The label’s motif depicts one of Manfred’s single most pleasure inducing sports, motorcycle racing. Here he describes the exhilaration of being on the bike:
“There are no more cell phones, no music or idle conversation, no baloney of any kind. Just me and that machine…flying. That’s how it feels. Like a hawk shooting through the air. Within a flash we hit handcuff speeds. And after a few exhilarating turns, my partner and I exchange a quick glance and…it is on. We never speak about it. There is no discussion about it before or after, but a less than coherent sense of honor says DUEL – the art of manliness. It is a rather friendly, taunting kind. More like a teasing tug-of-war or some type of dance or ballet. Periodically one passes the other and then back again. We trust in each other’s ability, courage and sense of adventure and we enjoy synchronicity. But no doubt about it, it is a duel of sort.”
So with the diptych cut into two it is suggested upon the user to perhaps reunite them, opening both together, in a sort of duel of the palate.
