Caractéristique du style graphique diffusé à Naples par son maître Jusepe de Ribera, Giordano définit les contours des trois figures à la plume et encre brune dans une composition verticale. La feuille est à mettre en relation avec La Descente de croix, un tableau de jeunesse exécuté pendant son séjour vénitien, aujourd'hui conservé à la Gallerie dell’Accademia de Venise (O. Ferrari, G. Scavizzi, Luca Giordano, Naples 1992, cat. A181, ill.) et connu par de nombreuses répliques.
Following a drawing technique spread in Naples by his early master Jusepe de Ribera, Giordano outlined in pen and ink three figures, all seen from below and aligned on a vertical sequence. The sheet relates to the artist’s Descent from the Cross, an early painting executed during his sojourn in Venice (now Gallerie dell’Accademia, Venice; O. Ferrari, G. Scavizzi, Luca Giordano, Naples 1992, cat. A181, ill.) and known through numerous replicas.
