Drawings in American Collections, cat. exp., New York, Pierpont Morgan Library 1996-1997, p. 198).
Caricatures form a substantial part of Tiepolo's drawn œuvre. While some depict actual persons, whose names often appear on the drawings, others depict general types, like lawyers, priests or dandies - the present drawing might fall in that category. That Tiepolo produced a large number of these drawings is attested by an inventory from the Algarotti Corniani collection from 1854 which mentions 'due grossi libri' with 'una copiosa collezione di disegni umoristici del Tiepolo' (B. Aikema, Tiepolo and His Circle. Drawings in American Collections, exhib. cat., New York, Pierpont Morgan Library and elsewhere, 1996-1997, p. 198). Furthermore, an album titled Tomo terzo de caricature, containing 107 caricatures, was dispersed at Christie's, London, 9 April 1943, lot 243. Aikema has suggested that Tiepolo produced his caricatures between 1753 and 1762, the year that the artist left for Spain.
