Certain themes and figures, such as this old woman, can be encountered often in Daumier’s graphic work. Because of its style and the way the woman’s nose and wrinkles are rendered, this drawing can be compared to the head of a man in a version of the Third class coach, a watercolour now in a private collection (op. cit., 1999-2000, no. 274, ill.). Made between 1862 and 1867, his series devoted to public transport allowed Daumier an occasion to observe the faces of figures from different social classes, especially in numerous studies of isolated heads, which later make their appearance in more ambitious compositions
