Lot Essay

A Damascus tile panel of identical ‘cusped medallion’ design is in the Victoria & Albert Museum (inv. 346:1 to 29-1896; published in Arthur Millner, Damascus Tiles, Munich, London and New York, 2015, fig. 4.55, pp.162-163 and cover). Millner writes that whilst no identical tiles of this pattern remain in situ, a variant can be seen in the prayer hall of the Darwishiyya Mosque in Damascus, dating to 1575-1600 (Millner, 2015, p.162).
