Lot Essay

Jules Viellard and his two sons Albert and Charles produced fine ceramics in Bordeaux between 1845 and 1895. They produced pieces in a variety of styles, including some inspired by Islamic calligraphy and decoration. In the present three dishes, the borders are exquisitely decorated with bands of pseudo knotted kufic script. Many Vieillard pieces are exhibited at the Musée des Arts décoratifs et du Design in Bordeaux. A large Mamluk style basin by Vieillard sold at Sotheby’s, Paris, 30 March 2011, lot 128.
