Lot Essay

The present reference 5980/1AR is preserved in like new condition and believed to be one of only three examples of this model to appear in public to date.

Nautilus ref. 5980/1AR
Reference 5980/1AR was introduced at Baselworld 2013, marking the return of two-tone timepieces. It is fitted with a 40.5 mm. wide stainless steel and 18K pink gold case and bracelet, the stunning blue dial is inspired by the dial colour of the first Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 3700/1, however with a much richer and darker tone. The blue gradient changes colour depending on lighting conditions, all beautifully contrasting with the rose gold luminescent hour markers and hands and the white accents of the mono-counter chronograph register and subsidiary seconds dial.

Nautilus ref. 5980
Reference 5980 made its debut at Baselworld 2006, year of the 30th anniversary of the iconic reference 3700/1 designed by Gérald Genta. As a vital complication of a sports watch, the reference is equipped with a chronograph function and the renowned "bull's eye" subsidiary dial. First seen on reference 5960, this design has captivated the heart of collectors, it includes both the minute and hour registers, arranged concentrically. The inner part of the dial presents the hours register, with Arabic and dot half hour divisions, the outer ring is reserved for the minutes register with Arabic and baton divisions. One revolution of the minutes hand equals to half an hour.

Reference 5980 is fitted with Patek Philippe's entirely in-house made chronograph calibre 28-520 C stamped with the company's "PP" hallmark of excellence, the Patek Philippe Seal.

The calibre 28-520 C was originally created for the reference 5960, Patek Philippe’s first self-winding chronograph with annual calendar, it was later adjusted to the reference 5980 with only the date display.
