Lot Essay

The present “Ovettone” or “big egg” as it is affectionately called by collectors for its large size is a highly attractive example of the rare ref. 6204. In excellent overall condition, its rarity is further enhanced by the pink gold case and black gloss dial.

To commemorate the firm's 40th anniversary in 1945, Rolex introduced a new model which was to become one of the firm's flagships, the celebrated "Datejust". This larger version of the famous "bubble back" was fitted with the new calibre A.296, originally used in reference 5026, the large "bubble back".

Ref. 6104 and its sister reference 6105 are the largest of the early Datejust models, furthermore distinguished by the red date indication.
