This extremely rare and early reference 6062 "stelline” is a superb discovery to the world of Rolex collectors as it has never been offered at auction before. Furthermore it is, with serial number 690’042, one of the earliest examples known publically and according to research, excluding examples where the serial number is unknown, only three other star dial 6062’s are known with serial numbers below 700’000, no. 690’028, no. 690’034 and no. 690’047. The majority of recorded examples have serial numbers in the upper 700’000s up to the late 900’000s. Interestingly, watch no. 690’047, with case number only five numbers after the present watch, was also a pink gold “stelline” which was formerly the property of Ibn Saud, King of Saudi Arabia.
The present reference 6062 is one of the rarest and most sought after versions of the model, namely being cased in pink gold and featuring the ultra-rare star or “stelline” dial. Only a handful of unrestored examples in pink gold have ever been offered for sale at auction and have always caused a sensation in the market.
The dial is in superbly original condition, retaining its subtle grainé finish and original printing throughout. Furthermore, the apertures for the month and weekday indications are sharp and angular, a feature which is so easily lost when such a dial is refinished.
The case, most probably, has not been polished since new with the case lines excellently preserved, both on the upper side and also to the back which retains its original satin finish and crisp clear hallmark. Similarly preserved between the lugs, both the reference and case numbers are stunningly crisp.
The reference 6062 was in production for only three years at the beginning of the 1950s and is one of only two Rolex models ever to have a full triple calendar and moon phase indication. Together with the non-Oyster reference 8171, the 6062 combines the most desirable features together in one superb classic watch. Many Rolex collectors and scholars consider it the most prestigious model ever made. It was available in yellow gold, pink gold and stainless steel, the pink gold being the rarest of the two gold models.
Such an early example of this trophy model in pink gold, fresh to the market, with the rare "star" dial and in such untouched and original condition after almost 70 years presents an opportunity not to be missed.
Examples of the reference 6062 are illustrated in 100 Superlative Rolex Watches by J. Goldberger, pp. 138-152.
