Lot Essay

The present Cosmograph Daytona is an extremely rare representative of the celebrated reference 6241, distinguished by the so-called “Jumbo logo” dial, referring to the large DAYTONA designation below the signature Rolex, Cosmograph, the size unmistakably larger than normally found on this model. Examples featuring this very particular three-line signature are hardly ever making a public appearance.

Two other references 6241 with the “Jumbo logo” are prominently illustrated and described in Pucci Papaleo’s Ultimate Rolex Daytona, the stainless steel “Ricciardi” with 1.7 serial number on pp. 224 & 225, and a 14K gold example with black/champagne dial on pp. 240 & 241.

The latter, comparable to the present example, is described as “Nero Dial Incorporating Jumbo Logo” and “The gold chronograph reference 6241 illustrated in these pages – powered by a 722 caliber – displays the characteristic black grené dial with contrasting champagne coloured subsidiary registers, enhanced by its main layout which is quite rare to find because it is enriched by oversized Daytona writing, commonly defined as “jumbo logo”.

Property of an important Asian private collector for many years, the overall appeal of this “jumbo logo” 6241 is further enhanced by its superb overall condition. The case displays full proportions and crisp gold mark, serial and reference numbers. The traces of oxidation to the right band, a typical sign for watches which have not been used in a very long time, underline the fact that the present watch was a "sleeping beauty" for many decades. The charismatic black dial with champagne subsidiary dials and gold writing shows no signs of any restoration, all luminous accents are intact and in a shade perfectly matching the luminescence to the gold hands.
Another noteworthy fact is the designation "ROW" stamped on the movement, indicating that the original destination for the watch was the North American market.

Rarity, private provenance and outstanding overall condition render this Cosmograph Daytona a trophy for the collector of exceptional timepieces.

Reference 6241
Reference 6241 was introduced into the market in the early 1960s and remained in production until around 1969. Available in stainless steel, 14K and 18K gold, it was fitted with the "non-Oyster" or "non-screw down" chronograph buttons and a bezel with black plastic insert, the tachymetre scale printed in white. The dials featured the designations "Rolex Cosmograph" but not always the "Daytona".
