Lot Essay

Maharaja Shri Ishwari Prasad Narayan Singh (r.1835-89), was granted the title of Maharaja of Benares in 1889 for staying loyal to the British during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Unfortunately, he passed away shortly after being granted the title. An album of photographs given to Queen Victoria by Dr John William Tyler, 15th January 1887 includes a photograph of him. This miniature portrait would have been painted from a photograph of the Maharaja as was often the case during this period.
