Toan Kobayashi (1916-2007), whose original name was Ko¯yo¯, was a renowned Japanese calligrapher and seal carver from Saitama prefecture. He was a student of Senro Kawai (1871-1945), with a talent for seal carving on par with Joteki Bai (1914-2008). He served as head of the Japanese Seal Carvers Association and Honorary Vice President of China’s Xiling Seal Art Society. In 2004 he was awarded Japan’s Order of Culture, in recognition of his substantial efforts in this sector.Kobayashi’s collection included both Chinese seals and calligraphy, the majority of works coming from members of the Xiling Seal Art Society. His selection of eminent works by Chinese calligraphers included: Jin Nong (1687-1763), Zheng Xie (1693-1765), Yi Bingshou (1754-1816), Yang Yisun (1813-1881), Yang Xian (1819-1896), and Wu Dacheng (1835-1902).
