Château Haut-Brion 1959
Pessac (Graves), 1er cru classé
Corroded capsules, two damaged, one badly damaged, Bin-soiled labels, one slightly damaged. Levels: one 4.5cms, one 5.5cms and one 6cms below base of corks
Tasting note: Thanks to the vineyard’s deep Graves gravel, the wine is distinctively different to its peers further north in the Medoc in appearance, nose and taste – yet it also has elegance and finesse. Very distinctive nose, tobacco-like, earthy fragrance, surging out of the glass; full of fruit yet concentrated. Most recently: a wonderful graduation of colour; showing age but sweet and mellow, with a lovely edge of honeycomb scent after an hour in the glass. A positive, sweet entry, soft yet assertive. Above all, all the component parts working in harmony. Last tasted April 2003 ***** MB
