Lot Essay

Mr du Gardin worked in the wine and cosmetic business in China in the 1930s and was captivated by Chinese art and culture. During his stay in China, he would attend salons hosted by French compatriots and acquired many Chinese paintings by artists such as Huang Binhong (1864-1955), Qi Baishi (1863-1957), Fu Baoshi (1904-1965), Lin Fengmian (1900-1991), etc. In the paintings, he would often write on the back or mount of the painting to record the provenance.
