CHINE, DEBUT DU XXEME SIECLE
En forme de deux vases balustres accolés, la panse est ornée d'un registre continu représentant deux phénix et des dragons kui archaïsants. Le col et le pied évasés sont à décor de pétales et de feuilles de bananier stylisés. La base porte une marque horizontale apocryphe à six caractères en cachet de l'empereur Qianlong. Le couvercle est surmonté de deux prises en forme de bouton.

Previously in a French private collection, acquired in the French art market in the 1960s-1970s, and thence by descent.

Lot Essay

Conjoined forms, incorporating sections of two or more shapes to create a single vessel, were a visual innovation widely propergated during the Yongzheng and the Qianlong reign. A smaller blue and white coupled vase with very similar archaistic dragon and phoenix motifs on the main body is in the collection of the National Palace Museum of Taipei.
