Lot Essay

The design of this jardinière is similar to those produced by the Compton Potters' Art Guild, established by Mary Seton Watts (d. 1938), in the village of Compton, near Guildford in 1895. Its distinctive style was popularized by the early 20th century garden design of Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932).
