The transfiguring magic of the moonlight is the most remarkable element of this painting. The effect of the lighting makes the image appear three-dimensional and it imbues the painting with a poetic feeling. The shadow of the shepherd and the sheep seem as real as the figures themselves. This painting was created during Segantini’s Brianza phase.
