Lot Essay
This piece reveals the view from the promenade along the shore of the Lake of Geneva in Pully. The aspect of the painting is looking out over the lake to the shoulder of the Malatraix mountain, the peaks of the Tour de Mayen and the Tour d’Aï, and the right-hand flank of the Croix de la Lé. Ferdinand Holder made only three paintings with the motif of a willow tree by the Lake of Geneva from the town of Pully that have the same view across the water. This painting is similar to the second version of Willow Tree by the Lake of Geneva, from 1891, the original of which has disappeared and its whereabouts is unknown. In the original version of Willow Tree by the Lake of Geneva, from 1882 a boy depicted in it sitting next to the tree.
