Lot Essay
This elegant commode typifies the fashion for furniture mounted with exotic and rare lacquer which was controlled by the marchand-merciers. It relates to a group of lacquer commodes with similar trailing foliate rococo mounts used by ébénistes such as Mathieu Criaerd and Jacques Dubois, indicating that Léonard Boudin, who was also marchand, probably collaborated with another ébéniste for its realisation.
A closely related commode of larger size but similarly decorated with pagodas and seascapes within pierced scrolling foliate encadrements, stamped by Boudin, sold Christie's, London, 23 May 2018, lot 225.
