GRATIANUS (d.c.1159). Decretum, with apparatus by Bartholomaeus Brixiensis (d.1258). [Lyons]: Nicolaus de Benedictis and Jacobinus Suigus, 28 April 1497.

A rare edition of a foundational work of canon law. Gratianus, a 12th-century cleric from Bologna, compiled this voluminous work which for centuries remained the basic textbook on church discipline and regulation. Not just a collection of texts, the Decretum is also a treatise which attempts to resolve apparent contradictions between Gratianus’s various sources. Rare: ISTC lists just 2 copies of this edition, at Corpus Christi, Oxford and at Uppsala; RBH/ABPC record no copies at auction. GW 11383; ISTC ig00388600.

Royal folio (438 x 285mm). 523 leaves (of 524, lacking the last leaf QQ10), title printed in red, text and surrounding commentary printed in red and black, initials in red and blue, 2ff. ‘Tabula’ bound between a1 and a2, a5 duplicated (repaired tear in title, small wormholes in first 2 quires, large portion of NN5 lacking, occasional marginal staining heavier in last few quires with associated loss in last quire). Contemporary Erfurt blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards bound by the ‘Dicker Hund’ workshop active c.1490-1520 [Kyriss 93, EBDB w000112], one clasp (of 2), titled in manuscript on fore-edge (binding slightly soiled, light bubbling of leather with minor loss of adhesion to upper board). Provenance: Geiorg Fridrig (inscription) – Fulda, Kloster Frauenberg, Franciscan convent (17th-century inscription and later ink stamp) – unidentified monastic ink stamps.
