A YELLOW JADE 'ABSTINENCE' PLAQUE
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
The plaque is carved as two confronting openwork archaistic chilong framing a rectangular panel, inscribed on one side with the characters zhaijie, which may be translated as “abstinence”, which is repeated in Manchu on the reverse. The stone is of an even greenish-yellow tone with dark russet inclusions.
