Lot Essay

Although Vajrabhairava is of Indian origin he became one of the most powerful protective deities in Tibet, especially amongst followers of the Gelugspa order. He is shown here in physical union with his consort, multiple-legged and armed. Of his nine heads, one is that of a buffalo and on the top is placed the head of Manjushri. In fact Vajrabhairava is an angry manifestation of this god of wisdom. The present bronze is a fine example showing the complexity of such works created by Tibetan artists.
