Superbly painted in gold and filled in with subdued touches of various colours this nag thang painting is striking and mesmerizing to one’s eye. The centre is occupied by mGon po beng mahakala, a special form holding the staff (beng). His principle hands with ritual chopper and skull. His consort is offering him a blood-filled skull. Above him is visible Samantabhadra in sexual union with his partner, Vajrasattva and the eighth century master dGa’ rab rdo rje (Heller page 111). They are flanked by Che mchog heruka and Nairatmya. Mahakala himself is surrounded by three emanations and the one-eyed Ekajati. The lower register sees rDo rje legs pa in the centre flanked by Rahula with serpent body and another red coloured manifestation of Mahakala.
