Lot Essay

Another stunning black background painting in the private collection from the late Lionel Fournier portrays the lion-headed Mahakala riding a horse accompanied by his female assistant bDud mo seng gdong ma. He is holding spear and skull cup filled with the gtor ma. The importance of this painting is enhanced as all figures are inscribed in gold giving their name. Above the central couple is placed the third Karmapa lama mKha’ spyod dbang po (1350-1405) according to Amy Heller (page 113). To his right are portrayed Samvara and Klu bdud nag po who is riding a makara and holds a serpent. At the other side are the horse-headed Hayagriva and Tsangs pa dkar po riding a horse. Just below Ksetrapalamahakala or Simhamukha Mahakala are visible the horse riding Na ra seng ha and Ma mo rdo rje ba lam with sword and bag. The lower register sees Yama riding the buffalo, Dam can on a goat, the armoured bTsan yam shud dmar po as well riding a horse and finally the blue coloured bDud gung ring brandishing a sword.
