These compotes bear the monogram MCM for Mary Carpenter Mayer (1784-1853), wife of Colonel George Mayer. Colonel Mayer was an ironmonger and hardware merchant of Lancaster, Pennsylvania (Hirschl & Adler Galleries, Inc., Neo-Classicism In America: Inspiration and Innovation, (New York, 1991) p. 112, no. 84).
