Lot Essay

James Guthrie Read headed Duncan, Fox and Co.'s South American interests from Lima between 1878-1909. Following his death in 1909, several of the pieces from his thirty-six strong collection of rare South American furniture were leant to the Victoria and Albert Museum before being moved to Temple Newsam in 1955, following the death of Lady Ramsden. This lot features the double-headed eagle of King Charles V, combined with flowering vases, which are typical of the Cuzco region.
