This form of early 19th Century bergere chair was manufactured in particular by Gillow of London and Lancaster, and generally supplied in pairs to accompany Grecian sofas set beside fireplaces. The palm-flower displayed on this chair also features on mahogany Grecian sofas invoiced by Gillow in 1824 for Glynllifon, Wales and on a related rosewood sofa, to be offered Sotheby's London, 4 February 2000, lot 105. A further related bergere with reeded legs was sold from Great Tew, Oxfordshire, Christie's house sale, 27-29 May 1987.
