Lot Essay

Isn’t life a series of images that changes as they repeat themselves?’ Andy Warhol

With Statue of Liberty, Andy Warhol, the art reproducibility maestro and leading figure of American Pop Art, offers us an arrangement featuring his iconic repeat screen-printing technique.
Using the drive and tempo of industrial machines, the artist has stitched together, edge to edge, six identical prints of the monument that symbolises his nation, creating a patchwork that superbly characterises his artistic expression focusing on the issues around reproduction.
In a masterful tour de force, the artist delivers a fusion between the repetition of the motif and an original, coherent arrangement in the conventional artistic sense. Sympathising with republican and democratic values, Warhol has used complex concepts and expressions of freedom in a striking and iconic image.
