VALK, Gerard (1652-1726) and Leonard VALK (1675-1746). Orbis Terrarum Nova et Accurata Tabula. Amsterdam: [c.1700].

Striking map of the world surrounded by allegorical scenes of the four seasons. Shirley notes 'The map has been updated geographical compared to Valk's earlier ones and now includes the newly-discovered Mississippi basin and the supposed Mer Glaciale almost connecting Hudson's Bay with the ocean just north of California. All traces of any southern continent have been deleted...' Both this map and an earlier Valck world map (Shirley World 531 & 532) share the same decorated border of 'four lively scenes in baroque style. These represent joyous Spring, industrious Summer, bucolic Autumn, and icy Winter' (Shirley p.529). Shirley World 638.

Double-hemisphere engraved world map, coloured by a contemporary hand, verso blank, with two smaller circular projections of the North and South Poles, cusps with weak impressions, California depicted as an island, the whole surrounded by an elaborate border depicting the four seasons, 488 x 575mm (plate mark), 539 x 639mm (sheet).
