Details
FLOWN ON APOLLO 8 – Heat Shield segment flown during the Apollo 8 mission, 21-27 December 1968.
A segment from the heat shield of the Command Module for Apollo 8, the first manned flight to the Moon.
This segment was part of the entire protective outer layer heat shield at the large blunt (aft) end of the Command Module, and as such was first material to protect the crew from temperatures of 5,000° F as they reentered Earth's atmosphere. The darkened portion is the end that was exposed directly to the friction of the Earth's atmosphere as they re-entered it. During re-entry, the resin would become heated, transforming it to a gaseous state which carried the heat away safely via convection. Fred Haise, the recipient of the heat shield segment, recalls in his signed provenance letter: "This Apollo 8 heat shield was presented to me as a memento for my work on the Apollo 8 flight. I served as the back-up Lunar Module Pilot for this first voyage to the Moon."
Heat shield segment composed of phenolic epoxy resin, 2.5 by 3 inches. Encased in a 3 by 3 inch lucite cylinder with base engraved: "APOLLO 8, DEC. 21-17, 1968." [With:] Fred Haise's typed and signed letter of provenance, 15 May 2019.
