Lot Essay

In style as well as in composition, this drawing can be compared to one of the same subject by Hans Rottenhammer at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (P. Prange in German Master Drawings from the Wolfgang Ratjen Collection, 1580-1900, exhib. cat., Washington, D.C., National Gallery of Art, 2010, no. 3, ill.). Dated by Peter Prange to circa 1610, when Rottenhammer had settled in the imperial city of Augsburg, his drawing or a similar work by him may have inspired the artist responsible for the present sheet, who was probably active in the same region.
