The first appearance in print of Pushkin’s poem ‘The Desire of Glory’, in an almanac produced between 1818 and 1825 by the Free Society of Lovers of Literature, established in 1816 by the authors A.A. Nikitin, E.P. Ljutsenko and the brothers Borovkovykh. Each issue, featuring verse, prose and essays, was printed in 200-300 copies. In ‘The Desire of Glory’, dedicated to Elizaveta Vorontsova, the poet lamented his total sacrifice in submitting to the ‘gloom of exile’ for his beloved.
