Lot Essay

The sitter of the present work is believed to be the artist's wife Christine. Nude works by the artist are very rare, with Nash painting only a handful of nudes during the 1920s. The blue vase in the painting is the same vase as in Flowers in a Blue Vase, loosely dated to the 1950s, in the collection of the Sunderland Museum.

We are very grateful to Andrew Lambirth for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
