Lot Essay

The print is based on a figure in Michelangelo's fresco, begun in 1546, of the Crucifixion of Saint Peter in the Capella Paolina at the Vatican. An impression with a complete platemark and wide margins, sold at Sotheby's, London, on 29 June 1993 (lot 76), proves that the plate of this print was considerably bigger than the present sheet, with large blank areas at left and above. For a more detailed discussion of this print, see Richard Godfrey's note in Sotheby's catalogue of 1993.
