Lot Essay

Compare a lidded sutra chest of similar size, constructed of huanghuali wood, carved on the front vertical side with a meander of lotus, illustrated by C. Evarts, A Leisurely Pursuit: Splendid Hardwood Antiquities from the Lian Yi Collection, Hong Kong, 2000, no. 80. Compare also the treatment of the carved dragon to a closely related zitan square-corner cabinet, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, dated to the mid-Qing period, illustrated by Tian Jiaqing, Classic Chinese Furniture of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1996, p. 228, no. 102.
