A related clock garniture of a very similar design, but with slight variation to the enamel decoration and most likely in the second and larger size of the model, was commissioned from Barbedienne by Herter Brothers for William H. Vanderbilt’s Fifth Avenue mansion, Barbedienne and the Herter brothers having maintained a close professional relationship from at least 1867 when Barbedienne produced a clock for the firm designed by Louis-Constant Sévin and Gustave Herther. Another similar garniture in the larger size and with putti supporting the urn clock is in the Khalili Collection (see H. Williams, Enamels of the World 1700-2000, The Khalili Collections, 2009, p. 73).
